Remember early enough to act
How to remember birthdays and anniversaries before the day arrives
A same-day alert tells you what you missed. A useful reminder gives you enough time to choose a card, write something real, and put it in the mail.
Use two reminders for two different jobs
Seven days before: prepare
Choose the card, check the mailing address, write the message, and place the stamped envelope where it will leave with you.
On the day: connect
Send a call or message, remember the person with intention, and note that the physical card was already sent.
Keep dates connected to people
A calendar can store an event, but a people-centered system holds the relationship around it: the correct address, important anniversaries, a note about what matters to them, and a record of cards you have sent.
Begin with a small circle
Do not import hundreds of contacts and turn kindness into data entry. Start with ten people you genuinely want to remember well. Add birthdays and anniversaries first, then include other dates only when they carry real meaning.
Create a monthly card check-in
Once a month, look ahead four to six weeks. Confirm addresses, restock stamps, and choose cards before life becomes busy. This small ritual catches upcoming dates and also creates room for just-because notes.
